Non Surgical Gum Therapy is an Option in Barrie.

The team at Barrie Smile Centre is very pleased to offer a conservative approach, i.e. non surgical periodontal (gum) therapy. Gum disease is a chronic infection that occurs as a result of bacterial plaque and tartar that accumulates under the gums. This aggressive bacteria eventually destroys the gum attachment and bone that surrounds and supports the teeth. With no intervention, this will inevitably lead to tooth loss.

Sadly, gum disease and this type of periodontal infection are usually asymptomatic, meaning that patients are often unaware of their condition. Due to this, infection can be present for many years, without any pain. However, subtle signs such as red or bleeding gums when brushing & flossing, or persistent bad breath may be an indication of a problem.

At Barrie Smile Centre, our group of professionals have devised an organized system for early detection, diagnosis, non-surgical treatment and maintenance of this early inflammatory phase of periodontal disease. We also have a system to aid in the early detection of premalignant or malignant changes of the oral tissues as related to oral cancer (oral cancer screening). We will customize an individualized treatment plan, created by our dentists and dental hygienists to reduce the signs of infection in your mouth, including our recommendations for daily home care and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Periodontal Pocket?

You may remember sitting in the dental chair while the hygienist or dentist records a bunch of numbers, while probing around your teeth and gums. Most likely, they were recording the depths of any “pockets” around your teeth.

A “pocket” is the area between the top of the tissue and the bone surrounding the tooth. This area is measured using a small ruler type instrument called a probe. When infected or inflamed, the tissue pulls back from the tooth and bleeds easily. Measuring these pocket depths provides a good indication as to the amount of bone loss or gum disease surrounding each tooth.

What is SRP? (Scaling and Root Planning)?

Scaling and root planning is a dental term for removing plaque, tartar build-up, and stains from the tooth surface both above and below the gum line. Root planing focuses on eliminating hard and soft deposits and bio-film (bacteria) from below the gum line. In combination with SRP, sometimes we use medicated products to flush out or irrigate the pocket areas. This allows for a healthy reattachment of tissue to the root surfaces.

Goals of Soft Tissue Management® (Non-Surgical Gum Therapy Program)
  • Gums that do no bleed during brushing and flossing
  • Gingiva that is not red, swollen, or tender to touch
  • Fresh breath; reduction in bad taste & odour
  • Reduction in pocket depths around the teeth
  • Control of periodontal disease
  • Establishing methods to maintain good oral hygiene effectively, including personalized home care recommendations
